My gun is an SBEII. Here's the issue. The threads in the barrel seem to have worn to where I can only get about half a twist before the choke tube hits the top of the inner barrel(kind of hard to explain). Threads are not stripped, they look worn. I ran a thread chaser down it and it seems smooth other than the threads are not deep. The threads on the choke tube don't make contact until the very end of the inner barrel threads. Is there a way for this to be fixed?

I put the choke tube in, twist it as tight as it can go(1/2 turn), it sits in there all normal looking. shoot a shell and watch the choke tube go sailing. Not sure I want to do that again:eek:

My buddies tell me that I got to buy me a new barrel. Ouch!
Headed to the gunsmith on Monday.
    What say you?

  2. Are you certain that you have the correct choke tube for your shotgun? It can be confusing as some brands use different size and threads.

Yes very certain! I use the Benelli chokes that came with the gun.
  4. The only good fix is to either replace the barrel, or cut this one back and re thread it.
  5. I can't fathom how you could wear out internal threads. I would wonder if there is any warranty for something like this.

Do you lube the choke threads when you install chokes?

  6. Like John5657, I'm not getting how one can wear out the threads on these things. And, if the threads in the barrel are actually what's worn, I don't see how they could possibly be repaired, short of cutting back the barrel and re-cutting the threads and fitting the tubes. So, I would think that the only two options would be to send the barrel to a competent barrelsmith, or purchase a new barrel.

  7. Don't Browning have a thread system for their older gun, but change it a few your back?

It's really the weirdest thing. I used a lube often. I think I'll call Benelli and see if they have had this happen. When I put the choke it it just slides to where the male and female threads make contact. At this point choke is almost all the way in. I get about 1/2 twist on it and no more. Choke is all the way in.

  9. You could find the barrel has swolen in the threaded area at the muzzle, its well known in hard worked benellis that they can give issue its the mobil and chrio choke system top threads they are a real problem with some guns.
Have the barrel measured by a engineering firm if you dont have a mic yourself this will tell you straight away whats happened.
Have you ever had a choke tube stick or be at all difficult to remove? this could have been the start of the problem, they will take out some of the thread material straight away, and its a rocky road from then on.
Try some ptfe plumbing tape this will help some times, but in your case it sounds as if its gone past this stage.
If the threads are gone its not all bad, just get your favourate choke tube and screw it in and then have it welded in permanent.
In at least one of my shotguns i only ever remove the choke to clean the threads i never change the choke so having it welded in would be no detriment in this case.
But if you are constantly swaping out chokes it a cut and rethread job probably not practical on an older gun but thats your call.
  10. Yes its the standard invector was changed to the invector plus and subsequently the DS chokes now on some models.
Invector choke tubes are short but i cant say i ever heard of one binding up or swelling like the benellis and berattas do, but i must say i would waqnt extended tubes if i were uaing steel in the old invectors just for peace of mind.
